Who We Are

Three Provide Severe and Winter Weather Information for only Davidson (Nashville) and Williamson Counties.

We exist because of the love and support of those who follow.

I’m David. I got high quality radar software (Gibson Ridge) in 2009 and loved it.

In 2010 storms were incoming and two of my friends were overtexting me for weather information specific to Nashville and Franklin. I got sick of typing texts on an old Razor phone so I opened a Twitter account and answered questions and put updates there.

Friends shared the twitter feed. By February 2011, 100 people followed. I changed the Twitter handle to @NashSevereWx.

#tSpotter started because of a July 7, 2011, Cool Springs flash flood. @NashSevereWx got three photos of submerged cars 39 minutes before NWS-Nashville did. Tom Johnstone was the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NWS-Nashville. We met and agreed to share information. I accessed internal NWS-Nashville information as media and shared information I got with NWS, local TV media, and emergency managers. We created #tSpotter to locate relevant severe weather reports.

In November 2011, I met Will on Twitter, then at the midtown Corner Pub. We decided to team up.

On March 2, 2012, a supercell dropped a tornado in Cheatham County. It was tornado warned across Nashville and released huge hail. We tweeted all day and night. Tweets were read on the radio on 104.5 FM. The following went from 2,000 to 8,000 in a day.

The intern program started May 2, 2013, with Yasser Kishk. The intern program is our favorite part of this. Interns write blog content. We edit and publish. Read about it here, it’s still going strong.

Andrew joined the team on September 18, 2015. That year Will and I learned @NashSevereWx and #tSpotter won the National Weather Association’s Walter J. Bennett Public Service Award for 2016. We traveled to Norfolk, VA to accept, we gave a speech, the entire weather community was there. We were welcomed into the operational meteorology community. I admit it, I got emotional.

We started working with Luke in January 2017 to stabilize and improve this website. We added storm-viewing cameras. We added a merch shop launched in 2019 to help reduce expenses.

Will, Andrew, and I live and/or work in Williamson County and/or Davidson County. We are all married, all of us have kids, we have college degrees, and this is our hobby that turned into a thing, whatever this is.

Providing you weather information isn’t easy, but it is a joy, and at the risk of sounding cliche-cheesy (which I hate), it’s our passion.

Our weather information is serious, nerd-curated, distilled for easy consumption, and distributed to you for free thanks to over 300 Patreon donors.

We use fancy radar and model data. We are dialed into the National Weather Service’s internal chat. We tweet out forecasts, watches, warnings, ETAs and commentary about hail, severe wind, lightning, tornadoes, snow, and other severe weather only for Davidson and Williamson Counties. We use this website to supplement our work on Twitter, which you can find @NashSevereWx on Twitter.
